WORKING FOR THE FUTURE (6): ADAPTING TO CHANGE

WORKING FOR THE FUTURE (6): ADAPTING TO CHANGE

Managing change is fast becoming a dominant theme of management practice. The pace of change is accelerating as markets become more international and technological innovation increases. Ensure that teams adapt to external changes.

Anticipating change

Over the course of a team’s life, it is inevitable that its tasks will change in terms of objectives, timescale, cost elements, or deadlines. To be successful, teams must be prepared to adapt quickly to new circumstances, External pressures may force changes within a team, and personnel may come and go. Make sure that team members recognize the need for change and are flexible enough to accept it, whatever form it may take.

ANALYZING TYPES OF CHANGE

Keeping Teams Informed

If you announce changes with enthusiasm, teams will develop a more positive attitude towards the new. Tell people about change as soon as enough detail is known for most questions to be answered, and be open with your opinions, but – as with all communication – make it a two-way exercise.

Change affects every member of a team, therefore everyone should be given the chance to react. Listen carefully to your team’s reactions – the more involved the team is in making any decisions, the more likely it is to accept change.

Seizing Opportunities

Market fluctuations, technological advances, new competitors, or simply new tastes in the market may appear to pose a threat to teams, but even unwelcome changes can be used as a springboard for renewed progress.

Try to analyze the proposed changes objectively. How can the drawbacks be offset or eliminated? How can the positive aspects be explained? Follow the analysis by brainstorming alternative courses of action to deal with the change – and look for the plan that seems to offer the least disadvantage and the greatest opportunity for progress to everybody within the team.

TIPS

  1. Appoint someone to monitor any relevant changes in the market.
  2. Be prepared to change even the most fundamental elements of a plan.
  3. Remember that some people are afraid of change.
  4. Look for team members who can advance change.
